Some interesting history about Great Dunmow
The Saxons liked to look at the "meadow on the hill" and the name stayed down to this day as "Dunmow". Dunmow was involved in the wool trade in the middle ages. In 1215 Robert Fitzwalter of Canfield Castle made King John sign the Magna Carte.
Great Dunmow was allowed a weekly market by Henry III and the charter of 1555 gave the town borough status.
There were two martyrs in 1556, Thomas Bowyer a weaver was burnt at the stake for his beliefs as a protestant. In 1601 Anne Higham Line was hung for sheltering Jesuit Priests being a Roman Catholic herself.
In 1662 the local people of Dunmow welcomed King Charles II. In 1710 John Fordham was a famous clockmaker in the town.
In 1784 Lionel Luckin tested the first unsinkable lifeboat on the Doctor's Pond.
In 1803 Richard Randall's brewery stood opposite the Doctor's Pond in Dunmow and the town also had its own maltings, now housing the Great Dunmow Museum.
In 1855 a victoria novelist, William Harrison Ainsworth, revived the Flitch trials in Great Dunmow. These now take place every 4 years. Couples have to prove to a mock court (made up of Judge and Jury of 6 maids and 6 bachelors) that they have been married for a year and a day without an argument. The successful couple are carried through the town along with a flitch of bacon - half a pig. The next Dunmow Flitch Trials will be 12 July 2008.
In 1869 Dunmow had its own Railway station which closed in 1969.
In 1990 Dunmow Town Council was established.
In 2000 the first Dunmow Mayor was elected.
In 2001 The former Maltings were opened as a Museum for the town where you can find out more about Great Dunmow and it's history.
